Meet the Instructor – A Bit About Me

Hi I’m Mark, ocean lover, paddle coach and proud dad of three (Jack, George and Marla). I’m also lucky to have an amazing wife Anastasia who supports all my adventures.
If I’m not coaching or paddling you’ll probably find me surfing squidding or just enjoying time with the family near the water. Anything to do with the ocean I’m in.

But it wasn’t always like this
I started in the surf club as a short plump kid who didn’t exactly stand out. Two older guys Dean Gardiner and Murray Hughes encouraged me to give paddling a shot. I had no idea what I was doing but I discovered I was good at it and I absolutely loved it.

From that moment everything changed
I became the first ever State Ski Champion for City of Perth SLSC. Later I moved to Sydney and raced for Manly LSC eventually winning the 1998 Australian Ski Relay Championship.

Honestly I don’t think I was the most naturally talented. What made the biggest difference for me was my work ethic. I trained hard, I stayed consistent and I learned how to handle a big workload. That’s probably what I’m most proud of.
These days what lights me up is helping others improve. Seeing someone get fitter more confident and fall in love with the ocean that’s what it’s all about.
If you’ve been thinking about giving paddling a go I’d love to help you get started.
